Pedagogic Reform

The reform of teaching and talent training mode is the key work of the School of Design, East China Normal University, which has always ranked first among domestic art and design colleges. The reform of teaching and talent training mode in the School of Design has won the first prize of teaching achievements of Shanghai Municipal Education Commission twice. Among them, the whole course evaluation system of undergraduate teaching, the full coverage of double-degree Sino-foreign joint training of undergraduate and master's degrees, the construction of entrepreneurship and innovation course and platform for college students and the reform of MFA practice course are all initiative among domestic colleges and universities, and have achieved fruitful Teaching results.
“1+1+1” refers to the reform of curriculum system and teaching mode + internationalization of school management + construction of entrepreneurship and innovation platform for college students.

Characteristics of curriculum system and teaching mode reform

A:As the traditional curriculum system has the disadvantage of fragmented knowledge dissemination, the modularized curriculum system emphasizes the systematicness of learning, especially the relation among courses;

B:Curriculum teaching emphasizes the logical relationship among concept, process and result;

C:Encourage students to select the courses independently and stimulate their interest in learning and learning initiative;

D:In view of the weak points of current students in learning and the requirements of the country and market for future design talents, strengthen the construction of humanities and art, modern science and technology curriculum system and practical course teaching system.

  1. Full coverage of “2+2” double-degree Sino-foreign joint training of undergraduate and master’s degrees

International student exchange and short-term exchange programs (sign cooperation agreements with 27 universities around the world, actually implement student exchange programs and obtain special international funding projects such as Erasmus and Joriss of EU, as well as the national scholarship of the Ministry of Education);
  3. Institutional construction of international work camp + overseas summer school (the school invites front-line designers from all over the world to hold a dozen international work camps every year, and organizes overseas summer schools regularly).
Characteristics of internationalization of school management
  1. In 2015, the School cooperated with five world-class art colleges to establish the Global Art and Design University Alliance (GADA) of East China Normal University, which has achieved the full coverage of double degree programs of undergraduate 2 + 2 and graduate 2 + 1 Sino-foreign cooperative education programs for all majors. Meanwhile, it has realized the docking of courses and credits of related majors with five art colleges around the world, as well as the exchange of teachers, Sino-foreign practice bases and other teaching resources. This reform is initiative in China;
  2.  The introduction of international teaching team to directly participate in the teaching management and curriculum quality evaluation of the School has greatly enhanced the connotation and depth of international education.
  3. Comprehensively improve students’ international vision by means of short-term exchanges, international work camps, overseas summer schools, international participation and other ways.

Layout “One Belt and One Road” for constructing talents training and international exchange

Tong Shijun, Secretary of the CPC Committee of the East China Normal University, signed a memorandum of cooperation on “Hungarian Hudec Scholarship” with the minister of Hungarian National Human Resources Ministry. Hungarian ambassador to China attended the signing ceremony.

A: The students have obtained 21 Red Dot Design Awards in recent 5 years;

B: The students have obtained 159 design patents in recent 5 years, among which 1 patent for invention and 27 patents for utility models;

C: The students’ accumulated scientific research transformation has reached RMB 17.97 million.

 

Construction of international school running system with Sino-foreign joint-training MFA double-degree program as the core
  • Full coverage of “2+1” MFA double-degree international joint-training majors

Construction of MFA practice base inside and outside the campus
  • The School of Design boasts first-class experimental equipment and facilities, an independent area of 3200 square meters’ professional laboratory (design center) and 11 professional studios and product model workshop, rapid prototyping machine room, screen printing, packaging and printing, ceramic technology, photography studio, photography darkroom, animation action capture system, building model workshop, 3D printing workshop and other professional laboratories. The Fashion Center (2000 square meters) in the School of Design is provided with the garment making workshop, plate making workshop, professional show field, etc. In 2016, the School of Design built a well-equipped MFA Entrepreneurship and Innovation center.
  • The School of Design has signed strategic cooperation agreements and established the joint research and development centers with a number of well-known enterprises, such as Hong Kong Starlite Group (Hong Kong listed company), Shanghai Shendi Group Co., Ltd. (Disney China Operation and Management Listed Company), Shanghai Tanhoo Group Co., Ltd. (a listed company mainly engaged in research and development of cultural derivative products), Fosun Group, Deli Stationery Company (a listed company), Bright Food Group (a listed company), Shanghai Garment Group and so on, among which the joint R & D center with Hong Kong Starlite Group has been listed as the key practice base of Shanghai Municipal Education Commission for MFA master of Arts.

The employment rate of MFA students in the School of Design has been 100% in recent three years.

Next work objectives of the entrepreneurship and innovation curriculum teaching reform in the School of Design

1.Double-span philosophy: interdisciplinary and cross-grade

  • The MFA entrepreneurship and innovation practice courses of the School of Design are open to the whole university.
  • Establishment of the system that integrates undergraduate with master programs

2.  Transformation of the course design idea: simple knowledge point dissemination (causing the fragmentation of the knowledge dissemination) and creative thinking (pay equal attention to professional quality and comprehensive abilities)

3.The entrepreneurship and innovation curriculum teaching reform is upgraded and transformed from Version 2.0 to Version 3.0 and 4.0.
